HOW THEY VOTED

* DOMESTIC VIOLENCE--Directed the Los Angeles Housing Department to set aside $5 million annually for the development of new shelters for battered women, as well as the expansion of three existing shelters. Los Angeles Police Cmdr. John White said the goal was to have 18 shelters, one in each police division. Alana Bowman of the city attorney’s office said the bed shortage at the existing shelters is so severe that two-thirds of the women who currently seek refuge are turned away for lack of room. She also said that only 3% of battered women end up reaching out to a shelter. Hotline number for assistance or advice on domestic violence issues is (310) 392-9896. Passed 14-0.

Voting yes: John Ferraro, Marvin Braude, Zev Yaroslavsky, Ruth Galanter, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Nate Holden, Jackie Goldberg.
