OXNARD : Naval Base Worker to Run for School Board
Robert Q. Valles, a 30-year civilian employee of the naval base in Port Hueneme, has announced that he will run for a seat on the board of the Oxnard Union High School District.
Valles, whose five children attended Catholic school, said a major theme of his campaign will be the involvement of businesses with local schools.
“If industry and business expect a quality student, then they’re going to have to get involved with the schools,” he said.
Valles, 58, said he has spent 13 years working with the high school district on a program that brings business and community leaders together with school leaders to talk about curriculum and other issues.
Valles works as the director of the employment and equal opportunity division at the U. S. Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme.
In addition to working with the school district, Valles is a member of the Mexican-American Engineer Society and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Ventura County.
A 1954 graduate of Oxnard High School, Valles earned an associate degree from Ventura College, a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a degree in business administration from the University of LaVerne.
