Citing concerns about the city’s financial management, Marty Simonoff has announced his intention to run for City Council in the November election.

Simonoff, 43, is a retired captain with the Huntington Park Police Department. The 13-year Brea resident now works with his family-owned recycling and trash hauling business.

“I am very concerned that the city will not be able to maintain essential public services with a budget deficit estimated in excess of $2 million,” Simonoff said.

“For the city to operate in a more efficient and effective manner than in the past, a realignment, consolidation, partnership or restructuring of city operations is needed. Additionally, the city must also re-evaluate the impact of redevelopment on the revenue sources available.”

Simonoff, who is making his first bid for public office, said he is also concerned about increasing the number of activities and facilities for youth.

His wife, Sonie, is a teacher’s aide at Brea Olinda High School. Their daughter is a junior at the high school, and their son is a seventh-grader at Brea Junior High School.
