A pre-dawn burglary Monday disrupted the fund-raising efforts of the Costa Mesa High School girls basketball team, which lost about $2,800 in fireworks it had planned to sell for the Fourth of July holiday.
Police said five people, using a crowbar, broke into the Freedom Fireworks stand at Grace Lane and Baker Street about 2:45 a.m. and removed 150 boxes of pyrotechnics worth more than $4,000.
Several hours later, authorities recovered some of the fireworks and arrested four juveniles and an adult. The burglars managed to pry open a hole in the corrugated metal stand, even though the booth was guarded by team supporters in a mobile home parked nearby. Further details were not available.
The girls basketball squad has sold fireworks for the last six years to raise funds for new uniforms and equipment. Lisa McNamee, the team’s head coach, estimated the loss at $2,800. Those wishing to make a donation to the Costa Mesa High team can write to McNamee at 2400 Main St., Suite 201, Irvine, Calif. 92714.
