An armed security guard was shot in the shoulder at an apartment complex in east Newhall by a man wielding a handgun who demanded the guard leave or be gunned down, a sheriff’s official said Monday.

The shooting occurred about 11:40 p.m. Sunday in the 24000 block of Pine Street, said Lt. Art Valenzuela of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. The gunman, described as a male Hispanic about 18 to 22 years old, remains at large.

Dago Natareno, 38, was listed in stable condition Monday evening at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Valenzuela said. Officials said they do not know what city Natareno lives in.

“He told us (that) prior to the shooting the occupants of a maroon Chevrolet Monte Carlo had driven by and said if he did not leave the area he would be shot,” Valenzuela said.

Shortly afterward, the gunman stepped between two apartment buildings Natareno was guarding and fired four shots from a small caliber handgun, Valenzuela said. Natareno did not return fire.
