LONG BEACH : New City Budget Adds 38 Police Officers

Share

Following a campaign season in which most local politicians called for more police, the City Council came through with funding in the new city budget to hire 38 additional officers and 26 civilian staffers in the police department in the 1994-95 fiscal year.

The council unanimously approved a $287.3-million spending plan that provides more money for the Police and Fire departments, but reduces spending in most of the city’s other departments. The general fund budget is lower than the $294.8-million budget for the previous fiscal year.

The Parks, Recreation and Marine Department faces the largest cut: $1.8 million. The city also plans to save money by closing the main library on Sundays throughout the summer.

The budget includes increases in various utility rates that will cost the average household $3.12 a month.
