OFFICIAL PARTY: The county’s dean of local politics, Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas F. Riley, has been making the circuit of appreciation dinners in this, his final year in office. Wednesday, the party came to his Hall of Administration office as past staffers gathered for the general’s 82nd birthday celebration. There was also a congratulatory lunch at the Balboa Bay Club. . . . “This has been a great day!” Riley said. “I’m feeling good.”

TICKET TO HEAVEN? The California Angels may be in last place, but maybe they’ll be rewarded for good deeds. The Angels and Coca-Cola have donated $50,000 to help Santa Ana build much-needed lights for its El Salvador Park baseball field. . . . Mayor Daniel H. Young this week offered the Angels a gift in return: “A guarantee that you will win the majority of the rest of your games this season.” To make it official, the guarantee was drawn up by City Atty. Edward J. Cooper.

SUMMER B-BALL: Just because Byron Scott plays for the Indiana Pacers instead of the Los Angeles Lakers doesn’t mean he’s forgotten where he likes to spend his summers. . . . Scott is returning to Orange County for two more of his basketball camps. The first is at Chapman University July 25-29 (it’s $225, $325 if you stay overnight) and the second at Santa Margarita High School, Aug. 8-12 ($200). It’s the ninth year of Scott’s youth camps, open to boys and girls age 8 to 17.

IF THIS SHUE FITS: Don’t think that Andrew Shue is going to be treated like any other player when he joins the Anaheim Splash indoor soccer team for its July 19 and 21 games at The Pond of Anaheim. Ten fans of Shue, who plays Billy on TV’s “Melrose Place,” will be chosen for each game as guest “Mermaids.” That’s the name of the team’s dance/spirit squad. Spokesman John Nicoletti says they expect such a flood of applicants that they’ll hold a drawing to choose the 20. It’s women only--but no age limit.
