OVIATT UNION: Things are coming together at Cal State Northridge’s quake-battered library--with a little help from the Federal Emergency Management Assistance program, that is. CSUN officials have decided to reopen portions of the Oviatt Library for the fall semester, rejecting a plan to build a temporary facility (B1). . . . Opened on Sept. 7, 1973, the library was named for the college’s first dean of instruction, Delmar T. Oviatt.

A NEW LOOK: Speaking of libraries, the Northridge branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is also about to reopen, sporting $110,000 worth of improvements large and small (B3). . . . “We’ve been repainted after 20 years and we now have carpeting,” said senior librarian Lina Daukas.

GO AWAY: You say you want to get away from it all? Well, you don’t have to go far. Many local campgrounds less than an hour’s drive from the Valley offer hiking, biking and fishing (Valley Life! Page 10). . . . At Buckhorn Campground, located in Angeles National Forest north of La Canada, hikers can explore terrain similar to the High Sierra (above).

HE’S A PINBALL WIZARD: Today Broadway, tomorrow the Valley. Its New York run concluded, The Who’s rock opera “Tommy” arrives at the Universal Amphitheatre on Wednesday (Valley Life! Page 3). . . . Prior to the band’s 1989 Universal concert, The Who had performed “Tommy” in its entirety only twice--in 1969 at London’s Coliseum and in 1970 at the Metropolitan Opera House.

HIGH-TECH HYPE: Sure, the screen’s smaller, but why leave home when you can check out the latest blockbusters from your desk? Three Valley-based studios--Disney, Warner Bros. and Universal--have made multimedia highlights from their summer films available on the CompuServe computer network. . . . Film fans can download clips from “The Lion King,” “Wyatt Earp” and “The Shadow.”
