GOLF ROUNDUP : McCumber Wins by Three Strokes

Mark McCumber ended a five-year victory drought Sunday, chipping in for consecutive back-nine birdies on the way to winning the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic at Williamsburg, Va.

The chip-ins on 15 and 16 highlighted a five-under 66 that gave McCumber a three-shot victory over PGA Tour rookie Glen Day at Kingsmill Golf Club.

McCumber, who also won the event in 1987, finished at 17-under 267, one shot off the tournament record.

“When was the last time anybody chipped in twice in one round to win?” McCumber said. “Now I’ll do chipping clinics.”

McCumber started the day with a one-shot lead over Bob Lohr. Day, three shots back at the beginning of the final round, had a five-under 31 on the front nine before stalling on the back nine. He wound up with a 66.

Justin Leonard, the NCAA champion from Texas who was playing in his third event as a pro, birdied his first two holes but couldn’t keep up after that. He wound up third after a 69 left him alone at 272. Lohr had a 72 and a 274 total.

Of his five-year tour slump, McCumber said: “It was bugging me. I’ve always felt I could play the game at high levels.”

Kelly Robbins birdied the first playoff hole to win the Jamie Farr Toledo LPGA Classic, the second victory of her career, at Sylvania, Ohio.

Robbins and Tammie Green finished 54 holes at nine-under 204. Robbins then made a five-foot putt for a birdie on the par-four 18th hole, the first of the playoff, while Green left a 16-foot birdie putt inches short.

Kim Williams, who was struck by a stray bullet while entering a drugstore in Niles, Ohio, after the second round of last weekend’s Youngstown-Warren Classic, had a 70 and finished tied for 10th.

Jim Colbert shot a final-round 69 to win the Kroger Senior Classic by two strokes over Raymond Floyd at Mason, Ohio.

Colbert’s 14-under-par 199 was one stroke off the tournament record.

Colbert started the day with a six-shot lead over Floyd and four others. He made the turn in 30 to move to 18 under, 10 strokes ahead of Floyd.

Then Floyd staged a charge.

With an eagle on No. 9 and four consecutive birdies, Floyd made up six strokes in five holes. When Colbert bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16, the lead was down to four.

The charge ended on No. 14, however, when Floyd bogeyed. He finished with a 65.

Dick Anderson, a former defensive back for the Miami Dolphins, made a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the $400,000 Isuzu Celebrity Golf Championship at Stateline, Nev.

He was tied after 54 holes at four-under 212 with former quarterback Steve Bartkowski and defending champion Rick Rhoden.
