VAN NUYS : LAPD Bomb Squad Makes House Call

Share

A homeowner whose friend left a solid block of dynamite, plastic explosives and a detonation cord with him before taking a vacation called Los Angeles police Monday and had the materials removed from his house, authorities said.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad removed the explosives from a home in the 13700 block of Wyandotte Avenue about 11:30 a.m., said Sgt. Brett Papworth.

“Apparently someone from Desert Storm brought it home and gave it to a friend to hold for him,” said Detective John Mattingly.

“The friend looked at it and didn’t know what it was and when he discovered they were explosives, he called the police.”

Officers from the bomb squad removed the explosives from the home and rendered them safe, he said.

Police did not identify the homeowner or his friend, Mattingly said.

One bomb squad officer, who was not identified, said that solid TNT is usually stable unless it’s exposed to extreme heat or direct flame.
