A natural hitter and outstanding fielder, the third baseman batted .294 as a rookie with the Angels in 1978 and had two more fine seasons with the club before being traded to Boston. His .336 average in his first season with the Red Sox led the league, and he later played on three consecutive pennant-winners in Oakland before retiring at the end of 1992.

Lansford, 37, is in his first year as a utility coach for the A’s and spends most of his spare time raising cattle at his ranch in Oregon.
