A man moving his pickup truck to a different spot on his driveway accidentally ran over and killed his 23-month-old son Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The accident, which occurred at 3:49 p.m. in the 1660 block of Katella Avenue, marked the fourth time since Saturday that a child has been killed or injured by a moving vehicle in Orange County.

“The father was going to do some work (on the brakes) and wanted to move the truck about 25 feet,” Anaheim Police Lt. Ray Welch said. “The child wandered out of the house unbeknownst to the father, who ran over the child.”

As the father moved the truck forward, a female friend ran from his house, shouting at him in warning. He looked down and saw his child lying on the ground, police said. The child’s death was ruled an accident and his father, 25-year-old Anthony Miller, will not face charges.

“This is a tragic human event, and we are not looking at it from a criminal standpoint,” Welch said.

Neighbors gathered around the house as frantic family members, including the mother, attempted to attend to Anthony Miller Jr., who would have been 2 next month.

Meanwhile, the father pulled wooden planks out of his truck and began to beat his vehicle, neighbors said.

“He was really pounding the truck,” said Norma Martinson, 61, who lives two houses away from the accident site. “He was just going crazy.”

The child suffered massive head and internal injuries and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead, Welch said.

“We have to remember that small children are very mobile and we have to be very mindful of them,” Welch said. “This all happened in such a short period of time, and now this tragedy is going to be with this family for the rest of their lives.”

The death was the latest in a series of recent automobile accidents that left young children injured or dead.

On Saturday, a 2-year-old girl was killed by a hit-and-run driver in front of her apartment complex in Westminster. Earlier that day, a 6-year-old boy received minor injuries when he darted from an apartment in Stanton and was hit by a hit-and-run driver.

And on Monday, a 7-year-old Irvine boy was left in critical condition when the car he was riding in was struck by a hit-and-run motorist. A suspect in that case has been arrested.
