Times London Bureau

The Financial Times of London reported that Germany’s loss to Bulgaria cost the German players bonuses of $80,000 apiece for defending their title. For reaching the quarterfinals, they received a mere $22,000 per man.

The paper noted that Romania’s players are to be made Citizens of Honor of Bucharest for their World Cup performance, after bowing out in penalty kicks against Sweden.

The only exception is Ion Vladiou, who became a “national shame” when suspended for earning the team’s only red card.
