AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Weiss Pitches No-Hitter for Van Nuys South on Two Days’ Rest

Mike Weiss threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 as Van Nuys South defeated Burbank North, 11-0, in an American Legion District 20 game at Burbank High on Wednesday.

Weiss (3-1), pitching with two days of rest, did not walk a batter in the six-inning game that was called because of the 10-run rule.

Two Burbank North batters reached base when the Van Nuys South catcher overthrew first base after dropping third strikes.

Marc Scorza, Greg Levine and Aaron Amitin led a Van Nuys South offense that racked up 15 hits.

Scorza was four for four, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Greg Levine was three for three with two runs batted in and two runs, and Amitin had a triple, home run and two RBIs.

In other District 20 games:

Encino 5, Granada Hills East 4--Brian Luderer’s infield single scored Jesse Slade with the winning run in the bottom of seventh at Valley College.

Encino (15-3) strung together four consecutive hits with one out in the decisive inning to win its third game in a row.

Chris Hebert (4-1) scattered eight hits, gave up four runs--two earned--struck out three and walked two for Encino. His scoreless-inning streak ended at 24 when Granada Hills East scored twice in the sixth.

Verdugo Hills 11, North Hollywood 8--Phil Onsaga was three for three with two home runs and pitched five innings to pick up the victory for Verdugo Hills (14-5) at Franklin Field in Van Nuys.

Loren Geller added a home run and two RBIs for Verdugo Hills.

Van Nuys East 2, Sun Valley 2--The top two teams in the Eastern Division played eight innings before the umpires called the game at Notre Dame High because of darkness.

Van Nuys East’s Joey Orlando tied the game with a two-run single in the fifth.

Canoga Park 10, San Fernando 7--Sean Hansen broke a 6-6 tie with a two-run double, giving Canoga Park (10-8) the victory at San Fernando High.

Hansen has driven in the go-ahead runs in the last two Canoga Park victories.

Jeremiah Johnson had five singles in five at-bats with two RBIs for Canoga Park.

Woodland Hills West 8, West Hills 7--Billy Burnette had three hits and Greg Kmet pitched his third complete game, leading Woodland Hills West (14-5) at El Camino Real High.

Kmet (4-1), a right-hander, gave up four earned runs in seven innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Las Virgenes 5, Granada Hills West 3--Bhret Haessig was three for three and drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning with a two-run double, leading Las Virgenes (10-8) at Granada Hills High.

Pat Costello (2-0) picked up the victory in relief and Tyler Taylor finished the game, earning his first save.
