“When the final whistle echoes around the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the victors parade the World Cup, many in the United States will probably review the past month as a spectacular, but rather eccentric diversion.

“They have witnessed some of the best that football has to offer in an atmosphere more congenial than perhaps anywhere else in the world. . . .

“The gladiatorial struggle between Romario and (Roberto) Baggio, the Brazilian and Italian strikers, will doubtless be discussed long into the night in bars, but then, it is felt, America will revert to the more comfortable arenas of football, baseball and basketball.”

Said Republican party staff member Christopher Rousso: “We have enjoyed the spectacle for the time being, and we will watch the match, but that will be the end of it. We like games that are based on strength, and soccer is just not seen that way over here.”
