WORLD CUP USA 1994 : Spotlight : YEAH, BUT CAN YOU DANCE TO IT?

Share

The music of the World Cup plays at the Rose Bowl for the final time today. What to expect:

“Glory Land”: The tournament’s official theme song, this stamped-out-of-a-computer mess tries to mesh Bruce Springsteen with Lee Greenwood. It winds up leaving listeners longing for “Rock the Pond,” the Mighty Ducks’ wretched anthem. Score: 2

“Ole, Ole Ole, Ole”: Every soccer fans’ favorite, Brazil’s faithful sing this early and often. Doesn’t have much of a beat, but who cares? Score: 8.

“FIFA anthem”: Completely without merit, though fans across the United States, used to rising for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” have stood each time this has been played. What’s the capital of FIFA? Score: 0

“Eee-tal-ya, Eee-tal-ya”: A conservative bunch compared to the Brazilians, Italians don’t sing much, but when they do, it’s this. Score: 6.

“Ohh ohh, ehh ehh, Bra-sil”: After their team scored in the semifinal, thousands of Brazilian fans, all seemingly in green and gold outfits, sang this while hip-hopping out of their Rose Bowl seats. It might have been the day’s best moment. Score: 10
