San Diego to Get Tourism Boost: The American Contract Bridge League will begin its national tournament Friday. The event, which will bring some 28,000 delegates to San Diego, is one of the largest conventions attracted to the city in recent years and comes at an opportune time for the city’s battered tourism market. Like the rest of Southern California, San Diego’s tourism has been hurt by natural calamities, the economic downturn and the Los Angeles civil disturbances. But, according to figures to be released this week by the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city is showing modest gains in year-to-date tourist head counts, visitor spending and hotel nights sold in the first five months of the year.
