Painting of Swastika on Car Called Hate Crime

In an incident authorities are calling a hate crime, vandals painted a swastika on a Chatsworth man’s car while it was parked in his driveway, police said Sunday.

Gary Raby, who is Jewish, said he discovered the swastika painted in red on the trunk of his white car when he went out to his driveway Saturday morning.

“I felt like I was violated,” said Raby, 39, who moved from West Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley four years ago. “I’m not sure whether it’s teen-agers or whether it’s skinheads. But it’s scary.”

Raby, who lives with his wife and three children on the 20800 block of Tulsa Street in Chatsworth, said it was the fourth time in two years that his property has been vandalized.

Vandals once smashed his family’s mailbox, another time his car was smeared with eggs and sugar, and in a third incident a window of his minivan was smashed, he said.

“It was just a real surprise and a horror, too,” Raby said. “It scares my wife, it scares my kids.”
