Buoyed by strong demand for its Pentium microprocessor, Intel Corp. said Monday that its second-quarter profit was 12% higher than a year ago.

The world’s largest computer chip manufacturer earned $640 million, or $1.46 a share, for the period ended July 2. It earned $569 million, or $1.30 a share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue was $2.77 billion, up 30% from $2.13 billion in 1993.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company said shipments of its Pentium processor were up substantially and remained on target to produce between 6 million and 7 million chips in 1994.
