IRVINE : Council OKs Plan for 4,000 Homes

The City Council has given final approval to an Irvine Co. plan to build up to 4,000 homes and two golf courses on land near Irvine Valley College.

The project, known as the Oakcreek village, generated little public opposition.

Many residents who lived around the proposed development praised the plan because it calls for the construction of new parks.

The village will be built on agricultural land bounded by Jeffrey Road, Sand Canyon Avenue, the Santa Ana Freeway and the San Diego Freeway.

Two 18-hole golf courses will be constructed at the northern edge of the village along with a community park and some industrial buildings.

Most of the housing units will be built at the southern end of the development near the San Diego Freeway.

The council’s unanimous approval of the final plan came at last week’s meeting.

At previous council meetings, golfers from around the city praised the project for bringing two new courses to the “flatlands” area of Irvine.

City officials and representatives from the Irvine Co. are now discussing whether the company will help fund design work for an underpass at Jeffrey Road near the Santa Ana Freeway.

The city has long sought to build the underpass, which is expected to cost $28 million.
