OXNARD : Busy Intersection to Be Widened

Share

With the help of $63,000 in federal funds, Oxnard plans to widen the intersection of Ventura Road at Channel Islands Boulevard--one of the most congested in the city.

A second southbound left-turn lane and a right-turn arrow for eastbound Channel Islands Boulevard traffic will be added.

Some traffic lights will also be relocated from the median strip to overhead poles to improve visibility and reduce the incidence of signal knockdowns.

“We look at it as one of our most heavily congested intersections,” said Oxnard traffic engineer Joe Genovese. “We found that it had a large accident rate. We’re adding a (second) left lane to reduce the number of rear-end collisions when the lanes fill up.”

In 1993, there were 22 accidents at the intersection, Genovese said.

The project is expected to cost $106,200, with the city paying the remainder of expenses. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year and the project should be complete next spring, Genovese said.
