Assistance League Elects New President

Long Beach resident Barbara Newton was elected president of the Assistance League of Long Beach. Newton, director of the London Brass Rubbing Centre at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, is also an honorary board member of the Long Beach Day Nursery.

Dr. Seymour Alban and Donald Barney will serve on the Long Beach Transit Board of Directors. Alban, an orthopedic surgeon, and Barney, owner of Barney’s Family Restaurant in Long Beach, were appointed to four-year terms.

Long Beach physician Marcy Zwelling-Aamot was named to the Los Angeles County Hospitals Commission by County Supervisor Deane Dana. She has been in private practice since 1990.

Pico Rivera residents Juan Monroy and Margo Campos won silver medals for swing and Latin dancing and a bronze medal in the waltz in the Senior Olympics ballroom dance competition. They represented the Pico Rivera Senior Center.

Agopie Poulos Pappas of Downey recently won the 1994 Mother of the Year award from the Philoptohos Society of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Pappas was honored for years of service to her family, church and local community.

William Davila, music instructor at Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier, was named Man of the Year by the American Biographical Institute. Davila, a guitarist, has recorded music professionally and has appeared on National Public Radio and consulted for public television documentaries.

Jaime Licht, a senior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, was one of 17 students to win a $1,000 college scholarship from the Jack in the Box essay and photo competition. More than 1,600 students applied with essays and photographs illustrating the contest theme “One Moment in Time.”
