WAILIN’ WEILAND: Orange County bashing is alive and well, from people you don’t expect. The Stone Temple Pilots got an enthusiastic reception when they played at Irvine Meadows last Saturday night, despite a run-in lead singer Scott Weiland had with one fan. So what did Weiland, a Huntington Beach native, have to say about the crowd? . . . At Sunday night’s concert in San Diego, he praised that crowd, saying he was glad to play for people who liked music, not like “those conservative fascist Nazis in Orange County. That was a challenge.”

SAY IT’S SO, JOE: Joe Garagiola may be just a .257 lifetime hitter, but he’s made millions as baseball’s resident humorist and TV pitchman. He’ll be guest auctioneer Friday at a charity auction that’s part of the huge, four-day sports memorabilia show that starts today at the Anaheim Convention Center. . . . Also featured: four women who were members of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which thrived for a few years after World War II.

THEATER ROOTS: Comic George Lopez likes to use his stand-up routine to debunk racial stereotypes. Which is why he promises a lot of ethnic humor when he appears tonight at South Coast Repertory. Lopez returns as emcee and performer in the annual “Raices: Una Noche del Teatro ‘94” (Roots: A Night of Theater ‘94). . . . While it’s a show of music, dance and theater by Latino artists--to benefit a South Coast Rep project helping Latino playwrights--Lopez says: “Last year’s audience was quite diverse.”

JUST A LOCAL TEAM? “Angels in the Outfield,” currently at 20 local theaters, is about a fictional California Angels team. It’s supposed to mean a lot of good, free publicity for the Angels. But it hasn’t always worked out that way. . . . Here’s a review from the latest People magazine: “The current Angels are a moderately successful team of little interest to anyone outside Anaheim.”
