A Woodland Hills man suspected of killing an innocent bystander in a shooting last month turned himself in to police Thursday, two days after police released his name and photograph and a $25,000 reward was posted.

Chaveliaee Hammond, 20, walked into the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys station at 3:30 a.m. accompanied by his mother and told police, “I’m Lil Man,” according to Detective Dan O’Hanian.

Hammond, whose street name is “Lil Man,” is scheduled to be arraigned today for murder and an unrelated robbery charge. He is being held without bail.

“I guess we put too much pressure on him to stay out,” O’Hanian said, referring to the public plea for help and the reward posted by the Los Angeles City Council.

Police had been looking for Hammond ever since the June 11 fatal shooting of Renee Hurtado, 21, outside a Panorama City convenience store at the corner of Van Nuys Boulevard and Plummer Street.

Hurtado had just made a purchase at the store and had returned to her car where her daughter, sister-in-law and niece were waiting. As Hurtado put her daughter on her lap, gunfire erupted.

Two stray bullets pierced through the windshield. The shots missed the little girl, but one struck Hurtado in the chest. She later died at a nearby hospital.

Police believe that Hammond was shooting at a group of men who were behind Hurtado’s car in a dispute over who could sell drugs on that corner. The men apparently were unarmed and did not shoot back, police said.

However, O’Hanian said that Hammond, believed to be a gang member, told police that the shooting had nothing to do with drugs.

“He said the other guys were talking gang stuff to him and he felt he had to do something,” O’Hanian said.
