PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Latest Offer Leaves Gandy Wanting

Share

The Rams increased their offer to tackle Wayne Gandy of Auburn, their No. 1 draft pick, to $5.13 million for five years, but refused to budge on the length of the deal, thereby earning Gandy’s disapproval.

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, if Gandy signs a five-year deal, the team will maintain his rights for a sixth season. Gandy has demanded a four-year deal that would leave him an unrestricted free agent at the expiration of his contract.

Tackle Bernard Williams, who was selected ahead of Gandy by Philadelphia, signed a five-year deal for $5.7 million. The Rams offered Gandy a similar deal and then added an additional $60,000 Friday.

“If they did a five-year deal that set him free after five years we’d do it right now,” said Neil Schwartz, Gandy’s agent. “We’d go back to the numbers the Rams proposed earlier. I told them not to come up in money. It’s not the money, it’s the length of the contract.”
