Hill Beats Tate; McCallum Wins
Virgil Hill retained his World Boxing Assn. light-heavyweight title Saturday night with a unanimous decision over Frank Tate, and Mike McCallum of Jamaica wrestled the World Boxing Council’s light-heavyweight championship from Australian Jeff Harding.
Hill, 30, successfully defended his title for the record 16th time.
Hill (39-1) dominated Tate (34-4) with left and right jabs. Neither fighter went down, though Hill sent Tate reeling into the ropes in the sixth round.
McCallum (47-2-1) won his first light-heavyweight belt with a unanimous decision. He has spent most of his career at the middleweight level.
Harding (23-2) took the fight to the challenger, who countered well with uppercuts and picked his way through Harding’s churning arms.
Harding, who had not fought in 19 months, had held the WBC title since Sept. 1991.
