Despite several weeks of front office turmoil and offers from three other teams, Detlef Schrempf will stay with the Seattle SuperSonics.

Schrempf signed a five-year contract for $20 million, the club said Monday. The 31-year-old forward said he received three other serious offers and heard from “a few other teams.”

All five years of Schrempf’s new contract are guaranteed, agent Jeff Neal said.

Schrempf, who exercised a clause making himself an unrestricted free agent, stayed with Seattle despite the controversial departure of longtime president and general manager Bob Whitsitt, who became general manager of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Detroit Pistons acquired center Eric Leckner from the Philadelphia 76ers for a second-round draft choice in 1996 or ’97.

The 76ers will receive the lesser of the Pistons’ two ’96 draft picks, unless that selection goes to Denver as part of an earlier trade. If the Nuggets get the ’96 choice, Philadelphia will get the second of the three picks Detroit has in the ’97 draft.

When Boston used Robert Parish’s $2.8-million slot under the salary cap to sign free agent forward Dominique Wilkins last week, it signaled the end of Parish’s career with the Celtics. Under NBA rules, a player whose slot was used for another player cannot re-sign with his team for one year, Celtic General Manager Jan Volk said.

Elton Scott, Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball as a high school player, will be ineligible for his freshman season at Louisville because he has failed to meet academic requirements. Academic shortcomings already have forced Louisville recruit Tyrone Nesby of Cairo, Ill., to enroll elsewhere.

Jurisprudence

Former Detroit Red Wing forward Bob Probert was charged with drunken driving in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., in connection with an accident earlier this month. The Red Wings released Probert last week because of his off-ice problems. He signed a $6.6-million, four-year contract with Chicago.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson hasn’t demonstrated “even a glimmer of remorse,” an attorney for the woman Tyson was convicted of raping says.

Tyson sent a letter earlier this month to the judge who presided over his 1992 rape trial. He asked that she reconsider her decision last month denying him an early release from prison.

Michael Weisman, who represents teen-age beauty contestant Desiree Washington, said the letter is an attempt on Tyson’s part to justify “his violent act of rape.”

Soccer

Romanian World Cup star Gheorghe Hagi agreed to a two-year contract with Barcelona and will join a roster that already includes Romario, Hristo Stoitchkov and Ronald Koeman. Hagi, a 29-year-old forward, has played for Brescia in the Italian League since the 1992-93 season.

The United States will make its first appearance at Wembley Stadium on Sept. 7 in an exhibition soccer game against England.
