On-Time Property Tax Payments Are Highest Since ’89

A near record number of Orange County residents are paying their property taxes on time.

The county treasurer-tax collector’s office reported Tuesday that in the first six months of the year, only 3.4% of the property taxes were delinquent--the lowest level since 1989.

“It would almost appear from these figures that Orange County’s economy took a change for the better,” County Treasurer Robert L. Citron said in his tax report.

For the past three years, county officials had blamed the recession for hurting their efforts to collect property taxes. The delinquency level peaked in 1993 at 4.4%, but the receipts started showing improvement with the collection of more than $1.85 billion this fiscal year.
