A 31-year-old man trying to avoid a disabled car on the Riverside Freeway died when his vehicle collided with the car and was struck broadside by another, the California Highway Patrol said.

Thomas Burke of Yucaipa attempted to avoid the disabled car, which had broken down in the fast lane just west of the Lakeview Avenue off-ramp about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, CHP Officer Angel Johnson said.

Burke’s car skidded sideways, collided with the disabled car and was struck by another vehicle driven by Dean Arthur Gill, 49, of Hemet, Johnson said.

The driver of the disabled car, Lea Chiarenza, 28, of Torrance, suffered injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Johnson said.

Burke was pronounced dead at the scene, Johnson said. Neither Gill nor his passenger suffered injuries, she said.
