CHICKEN MUSICK: You may not see many...

CHICKEN MUSICK: You may not see many chickens from the freeway, but Orange County’s tiny egg production has actually shown some growth lately. . . . Not that there are many chicken farms left. The only one of any size is Singing Hen Chicken Ranch in Cypress--and it’s down to fewer than 100 hens. Actually, 99% of all the commercial eggs in the county come from the jail system’s James A. Musick Branch Jail. Says Cal Meekhof, owner of the Cypress ranch, which once had 40,000 birds: “Chicken ranches don’t fit in with suburbs.”

LOOK, BUT RESPECT: Since Nicole Brown Simpson’s burial at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest six weeks ago, her unmarked grave has brought a small stream of daily visitors. . . . Some leave flowers or even notes, says Thomas R. Flynn, director of cemeteries for the local Roman Catholic diocese. “All are welcome, but it is a religious cemetery, and we expect people to act in the appropriate manner. So far, everyone has.”

PEDAL THE DAY AWAY: How long would it take you to cross America by bicycle if you could somehow pedal 24 hours a day? Just under seven days, say riders in the annual, corporate-sponsored Race Across America, which starts Sunday at the Holiday Inn in Irvine. . . . Four team members split the clock with six hour daily shifts each, the others sleeping in support vehicles. Last year’s winners, from Cypress-based PacifiCare, are back again. They should reach the finish line next Saturday in Savannah, Ga.

REALISTIC SWEAT: Frank Pangborn suggests if you want to go to Hollywood, try Irvine Valley College in Irvine first. The actor teaches a seminar there today on how to break into acting. Casting director Kathy Smith, who got Pangborn his first commercial, will be there to help. Says Pangborn: “It’s an extremely competitive business. But if you enjoy it, and are willing to sacrifice--and be a realist--don’t be afraid to go for it.”
