President Says He Might Intervene

Calling himself “a lifelong baseball fan,” President Clinton Wednesday indicated a willingness to intervene in the rising feud between major league baseball players and team owners.

“If we can play a constructive role, we will,” he said at a White House news conference, noting that Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich had met with representatives of both players and owners recently.

Clinton, who said he has “a greater interest in this than maybe a President even should,” did not elaborate on how the Administration might head off a threatened strike. He said only, “The situation is sufficiently delicate that I think we need to leave it at that.”
