The Comfort Zone

From the outside, The Gate looks like almost any other trendy La Cienega Boulevard nightclub. But once you step under the wrought-iron archway and into the reception area, it’s a place more akin to an English country estate than a Westside club.

The Gate opened three years ago where the La Cage Aux Folles nightclub used to be, and is its antithesis in every way. The carpets are thick Turkish throw rugs, hand-painted frescoes decorate the ceilings and books line the walls. Deep sofas and overstuffed chairs provide the ultimate in comfort.

The 10,000-square-foot club has a dining area, two seating areas, two outdoor patios with gas fireplaces and a dance floor that serves as the club’s soul.

There is also the Gallery, a roped-off VIP section where patrons can socialize and drink $300 bottles of champagne, conveniently placed in buckets next to every seating area.

“It’s been built and designed to be a nightclub,” said co-owner Mario Oliver, who has created such hot spots as Tryst and Club Vertigo. “This is the kind of place we want people to feel comfortable.”

It has become one of the trendiest clubs in the city.

“I have a good feeling of what people want,” said Oliver, a former model and native of Paris, who also manages the day-to-day operations of the club. “Each night, I come to the club as a customer.”

Things start to hop after 11 p.m. when the disc jockey starts spinning tunes from disco to hip hop and techno.

Nightclubs generally don’t have the best reputation for food but you may want to try the fare at The Gate. Under the direction of new chef David McMilan, formerly of the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, a menu has been prepared that is certain to attract a loyal crowd. House specials include lobster quesadilla, grilled Ahi tuna and an assortment of pasta dishes. And if you prefer something light, there are a number of hot and cold appetizers. Prices range from $8 for appetizers to $24 for entrees. Dinner is served from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Reservations are suggested.
