Showing Disrespect

Share

A significant piece of recent history for Port Hueneme was underlined when Councilman Dorill Wright announced at the Aug. 3 council meeting that he would not seek reelection this November, thus bringing to an end 30 years of sincere service to the city. Congratulations to him.

It undoubtedly was a moving experience for him to do that, and for most of the relatively small audience in attendance, except for one individual in the dias.

Our overpaid city manager, Dick Velthoen, sat in his plush chair during Mr. Wright’s entire statement slouched way down and with his eyes closed, as though he was in a deep sleep. He should be ashamed of himself, and he should apologize publicly to Mr. Wright at the next council meeting.

In many a business environment, a disrespectful public posture toward one’s superior, such as displayed by our city manager, well could have been the cause for a severe reprimand or even immediate termination. His “boss,” so to speak, Mayor Orvene Carpenter, was sitting right beside him and should have seen it all. Shame on the mayor, if he did not speak to Mr. Velthoen after the meeting about his disrespectful demeanor.
