Daniel Calder; UCLA English Professor

Daniel G. Calder, 55, professor of English at UCLA, noted scholar of Old English literature and a leader in the development of gay and lesbian studies on the UCLA campus. Editor and translator of several works on Old English literature--”Old English Poetry: Essays on Style,” “Cynewulf,” “A New Critical History of Old English Literature” among them--Calder had been working on a book of contemporary gay fiction at his death. He had taught at the University of Washington after receiving his doctorate from Indiana University in 1969. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1971 and was chairman of the English department from 1983 to 1990, a period of great growth in the department’s stature. Calder also served as associate dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television and as acting dean of the division of humanities in UCLA’s College of Letters and Sciences.
