VENTURA : Pier Fishing Contest Spans Generations

Share

The city of Ventura’s community services department is hosting an inter-generational sportfishing tournament Saturday at the newly remodeled Ventura Pier.

Youths and adults are invited to attend the free event; and fishing parties must be accompanied by someone 50 years of age or older. Organizers hope the contest will promote understanding and interaction among different age groups.

“It’s the first fishing tournament since the pier’s been remodeled,” spokeswoman Andrea Windle said. “The neat thing about it is that it is an inter-generational event, and that is also a first. It gives people a chance to close the generation gap.”

The tournament begins at 6 a.m. and fish will be judged from noon to 1 p.m. Registration will take place between 6 a.m. and noon. Anglers must bring their own gear, but bait will be available if needed.

Participants will be divided into nine age divisions and can enter various categories, including grandparent-child, mother-child, brother-sister, and pals under and over 50.

Prizes, which will be based on fish weight, will include fishing trips, tackle, reels, poles and gift certificates to restaurants and fishing supply shops. Raffle prizes will be awarded as well.

A fly-fishing specialist will be on hand to give demonstrations and instruction on casting and fly-tying. For more information call 658-4732.
