The Navy will offer public tours of the guided missile cruiser Port Royal at the Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme next week, officials announced Thursday.

The tours are scheduled for Aug. 20 and 21. Public visiting hours for the 567-foot-long warship will be 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., said Teri Reid, a Navy spokeswoman.

Reid said the new ship, which was commissioned in Georgia last month, is making a port call to the Port Hueneme-based laboratories of the Naval Surface Warfare Center to have its missile and gun systems checked and evaluated.

The Port Royal is the last of the Navy’s Ticonderoga-class of guided missile cruisers and is equipped with the computer-controlled Aegis weapons system. The vessel has 28 officers and 342 enlisted personnel.

Reid said visitors wishing to tour the Port Royal should enter the base at the Pleasant Valley Road gate and park in marked areas. Buses will be provided to and from the ship.

The base gate will close at 3:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The last tour will conclude at 4 p.m.
