A 38-year-old truck driver was killed early Saturday when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his big-rig and drove off an embankment, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities believe the accident occurred about midnight, but it was not discovered until about six hours later.

The driver, whose name was not released pending notification of his death to relatives, was traveling south on Interstate 5 near the Junipero Serra Road exit when he apparently fell asleep and drifted down an embankment into a dirt ditch, a CHP spokeswoman said. He was killed on impact.
