LOS ANGELES : Simpson Biopsy Shows No Evidence of Cancer

A biopsy of swollen lymph nodes from O.J. Simpson’s right armpit shows no evidence that he is suffering from cancer, defense attorneys said Monday.

Simpson, awaiting trail on charges of murdering his former wife and her friend, underwent minor diagnostic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center last week because he was suffering from progressive swelling of the nodes and drenching night sweats, said his physician, Dr. Robert Huizenga.

Huizenga said the biopsy was necessary “to rule out malignancy” after an “exhaustive” medical search for infectious causes--including the HIV virus that causes AIDS--had proved negative. The doctor said Simpson’s family has a history of cancer.

The football great, incarcerated in the Men’s Central Jail, was removed from his cell before dawn last Thursday for the brief surgical procedure at Cedars. He was returned to the cell a few hours later.

Detective George Ducoulombier, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said that all expenses incurred in the closely guarded transfer and return were charged to Simpson.
