LOS ANGELES : School Board Votes to Oppose ‘SOS’ Initiative

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Education members voted 6 to 0 this week to oppose Proposition 187, the “save our state” immigration initiative on the Nov. 8 state ballot.

The measure would require expulsion of illegal immigrants from California’s public schools and deny them most health care and social services.

Supporters, including the state Republican party, Gov. Pete Wilson and several taxpayer groups, say the measure is needed to cut costs and stem illegal immigration.

Opponents, including the California School Boards Assn., the California Teachers Assn. and the state Parent Teacher Assn., said the initiative would turn educators into immigration enforcers and burden them with additional paperwork, cost the state considerable federal funding and hurt children.
