Paul Kariya, the Mighty Ducks’ unsigned 1993 first-round draft pick, and his agent, Don Baizley, met with Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira and President Tony Tavares Monday in Vancouver, but there was little to report from the talks, a club spokesman said.
With training camp scheduled to open in Anaheim in less than two weeks, Ferreira has said he is focusing his attention on trying to sign Kariya, who sat out last year in order to return to the University of Maine for a semester and play for Canada in the Olympics. Meeting for the first time since June, the parties have agreed to continue discussions but are believed to remain some distance apart.
Kariya is seeking considerably more than the three-year, $4.2-million contract the Ducks gave to 1994 first-round pick Oleg Tverdovsky last week.
