6 Ex-Employees Sue Top Valu/Valu Plus Stores

Six former employees of Top Valu/Valu Plus grocery stores filed a class-action lawsuit Wednesday against the company alleging that it violated overtime, minimum wage and other labor regulations.

The suit and an accompanying statement allege that more than 1,000 current and past employees at 13 Top Valu/Valu Plus stores in Southern California were subjected to labor violations. The suit seeks back wages and penalties plus attorney fees and court costs.

Top Valu/Valu Plus is owned by K.V. Mart Co. of Long Beach. The company had no immediate response to the suit, which was filed Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court. Rick Eiden, director of organizing at the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324 in Buena Park, which helped the former employees prepare the lawsuit, accused K.V. Mart of gaining a competitive advantage by shortchanging its employees, most of whom are Latinos.
