A man who went for a midnight ocean swim with a friend apparently drowned in the waves near Newport Pier, police said.

The victim, a man in his 20s believed to be from Riverside, did not come back up after a large wave toppled him and his friend about 12:30 a.m., police Sgt. Andy Gonis said.

The victim’s body turned up about four hours later.

The name of the man was not released, pending notification of relatives. Detectives investigating the case did not identify the friend.
