New Parent Services Unit Will Offer Even More

Share

As one of the many parents from across the Los Angeles School district who has been working on the development of the new Parent Community Services Unit, I found Beth Shuster’s article, “Unwelcome Support” (Wednesday, Aug. 24) totally off the mark. This unit will in no way “take charge and standardize” Parent Centers or any other programs in this district, as charged in the article.

On the contrary, this historic new unit can be viewed as a “One-Stop Super Store” of services, training and support for parents and parent groups. Although all schools will be informed of its offerings, individual schools and clusters will make decisions regarding their specific needs and will be able to use the units as a resource for obtaining what they need. For once, parents whose children need help will be able to call one number and get results, rather than having to fight their way through the complicated LAUSD maze.

However, Valley parents will not be legally able to avail themselves of these services unless the board approves the General Fund Allocation, which has been recommended by the superintendent, when the board votes on the final budget Monday.
