Rail-Merger Opposition Builds: The California Public Utilities Commission added its voice to that of electric utilities and unions in voicing concerns about the proposed merger of Burlington Northern Inc. and Santa Fe Pacific Corp., which would create the nation’s largest railroad. The state agency urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to reject the fast-track approach to the proposed merger. Utilities and unions urged an outright rejection in comments to federal regulators last week, predicting reduced competition and fewer jobs.
