Westinghouse, Unions Avert Strike: The Pittsburgh-based company and three unions representing about 5,400 workers reached a tentative contract agreement hours after a vote to strike early Monday. The four-year agreement, which members are expected to vote on within two weeks, includes a wage increase of 13% over the life of the contract and offers a majority of workers a managed health care plan, Westinghouse Electric Corp. said. The unions involved are the International Union of Electrical Workers, the Federation of Salaried Employees and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Health benefits had been a major stumbling block in the negotiations, one union spokeswoman said. Westinghouse has cut its work force by 2,000 since December and is $3.3 billion in debt.
