PORT OF LOS ANGELES : Boaters Must Avoid Pier Construction Areas

Share

Boaters will have to steer clear of portions of the Port of Los Angeles during construction of a major pier during the next three years.

Contractors will begin work on the port’s Pier 300/400 project Tuesday. With the development of three miles of new navigation channels, a turning basin, and 5,000 linear feet of berths, it is the largest dredging and landfill project that has been undertaken in the nation, said port spokeswoman Barbara Yamamoto.

Signs on 14 steel platforms will mark safety zones and areas to avoid.

Boaters must stay out of these areas because of submerged rocks, pipelines, barges, tug boats, buoys and platforms, Yamamoto said. And floating equipment attached to barges will have steel anchor wires stretching above, along and under the water for up to 1,500 feet, she said.

Flyers notifying boaters of potential dangers associated with the project are being distributed from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach.
