SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Want to end the Labor Day weekend on a good old-fashioned note--literally?

The Conejo Pops Orchestra is giving a free outdoor concert Monday at Conejo Community Park in Thousand Oaks. Show time is 5 p.m.

This is a chance to bring a blanket and stretch out under the park’s giant oak trees and listen to old and new show tunes and even a patriotic march or two.

The orchestra, which is part of the Conejo Symphony Orchestra, has been offering the summer pops concert for close to 25 years.

You might want to get to the park early because the event draws 2,000 to 3,000. Bring a picnic dinner and make an evening of it.

“If it’s been hot, it’s usually cooling down by then and it’s quite pleasant,” said Steve Wiley, recreation services manager for the Conejo Recreation and Park District, which brings the concert to the park.

James Christensen, who has been affiliated with Walt Disney Productions for more than 24 years, will conduct the orchestra. If you have been to Disneyland or Disney World, you probably have heard Christensen’s music. He was music director for the theme parks for 12 years and has written soundtracks for the “Main Street Electrical Parade,” “Fantasy in the Sky” and other Disney parades.

Christensen, who has performed as guest conductor with the Conejo Pops Orchestra previously, will conduct arrangements from Broadway hits such as “The Sound of Music,” “Carousel,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats” and “A Chorus Line,” and the film “Star Wars.”

Monday’s pops concert will be performed by 45 to 50 musicians on a portable stage set up in a bowl-like area in the park. During intermission, mimes will pass the hat for donations. The concert is being sponsored by several community organizations and Musicians Local No. 581.

The concert also offers a chance to explore Conejo Community Park. If you feel like taking a short hike, you can walk the nature trail that winds through the park’s Conejo Valley Botanic Garden. The path takes you down next to a cool, shaded stream, as well as high on a hill overlooking the valley.
