When Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates decided to back a Washington state legislative candidate who is married to one of his employees, he did it in typical fashion--via electronic mail.

Sandra Jacobson sent Gates an e-mail note about her husband, Stu, a liberal Democrat running in Gates’ home district.

“It sounds like we agree on many things,” Gates wrote. “I am willing to endorse Stu. . . . Of course, I can’t put any time into it but you can mention me as a supporter.”

Steve Van Luven, Jacobson’s Republican opponent, said of Gates’ notes: “I don’t think the public cares what he does.”
