BY DESIGN : Dyeing to Help

Share

Finding the best dye job in town is not easy. But a few cleaners and dye factories are willing to do the deed.

Most of the people we spoke to were reluctant to quote prices over the phone. They said they prefer to see and feel the garment to be dyed, so they know what they are getting into. Prices are determined by fabric and thread count, and can vary widely. For example, dyeing a jacket can cost anywhere from $15 to $80; slacks are $15 to $50; an ordinary dress starts at about $22 and goes up to $60, and a vest will run you $12 to $25.

If the garment is not made of natural fibers, you may be asked to sign a waiver releasing the dyer of all responsibility--including shrinkage. It gets worse: Most places will not guarantee results.
