El Concilio to Help Replace Green Cards
The U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service has extended the deadline for its green card replacement program because of a last-minute deluge of applicants.
The program requires all permanent residents who have an older edition of the green card to apply for a new version. The new cards will have picture identification and will be either white or rainbow-colored.
Green cards issued before 1979 were set to expire Sept. 20, but the replacement period has been extended for six months because of the high number of applicants. The new deadline is March 20.
El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, a local Latino advocacy group, processes green card replacement applications so Ventura County residents do not have to travel to INS offices in Los Angeles.
“Permanent residents who immigrated prior to 1978 and still have the old green card, which is actually green, need to do it,” said Gregory Simons, of El Concilio. “Most of them are senior citizens. In Ventura County, it is estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 people need these services.”
